the 1998 daytona five hundred

(to the song “1985” by bowling for soup)



whoo-hoo-hoo!

whoo-hoo-hoo!

earnhardt had won them all

on tracks both big and small

a road course one time

he crossed the brickyard line

won seven winston cups

but that was not enough

‘cause each year did deny

a harley earl prize:

one time irvan pulled a slingshot

then he crashed with two more cars

one time he ran out of gas

one time contact flipped him hard

two “dale-dale” shows:

he got supporting roles

worse still, he blew a tire,

and lost to

a guy

named “cope”!

thirty times took home a

bud shootout, one-twenty-five,

an iroc or a busch race; while

the pepsi four hundred

was nice, he badly wanted

to score the big race that day

race day, five guys strived for

the first “no bull five”

and up front both labontes

started out side-by-side

the race was mostly green

lapped cars came up so quickly

sophomore skinner led

then by his thirty-one the three car sped

earnhardt had a good lucky penny

which helped him fight off the tough cars entered by penske

hoping for history, the crowd was anxious

and then, well don’t you know

bad luck

found three

(cars on pit road, but not)

quick pit stops

spun out with lake speed

after all the pit crews

gave high-fives to him, he moved

to do donuts on his stage
