if you're new to nascar

"the magic mile" is a one-mile racetrack in new hampshire,
"the monster mile" is the same thing, only faster and in delaware,
"the lady in black" is an egg-shaped track built next to a pond in south carolina,
and "the screaming peach" is the best rejected nickname for atlanta motor speedway.

a racetrack where you can spin across the finish line is called a "short track,"
a racetrack where you can flip across the finish line is called a "plate track,"
a racetrack built in the last decade is called a "cookie-cutter track,"
and a racetrack where familiar cars are driven by unfamiliar drivers is called a "road course."

"the bump-and-run" is when the runner-up spins out the leader on a short track,
"the bump draft" is when the runner-up spins out the leader on a plate track,
"the big one" is when the runner-up eliminates everyone behind him by spinning out the leader,
and "the aero push" is what is blamed for all three.

"the budweiser shootout" is won by whichever past polesitter doesn’t crash,
"the nextel all-star challenge" is won by whichever past winner doesn’t crash,
"the lucky dog" is someone who’s given his lap back when the caution comes out,
and "the oval office" is where unlucky dogs go after the race is over.

a car that is "loose" causes an accident by spinning out on a straightaway,
a car that is "tight" causes an accident by going straight into a curve,
a car that is "pushy-loose" causes an accident by distracting the driver,
and a car that is "blowing up" causes an accident by dropping oil onto the track.

a driver who says "i won at bristol" means "i got past kurt busch,"
a driver who says "i won at talladega" means "i got past dale earnhardt, jr.,"
a driver who says "i won at martinsville" means "i got past jeff gordon,"
and a driver who says "i won at charlotte" means "i’m jimmie johnson."
